Chris Needs MBEAll round entertainer as well as a late night radio presenter.
"Are you in the garden?"
Hailing from Cwmafan, Chris Needs is one of Wales' most popular radio presenters. Currently he is the host of the daily late night show on Radio Wales and many of his loyal listeners have joined his 'Garden Club'.
Chris has very strong links to Cwmafan, where he was born and bred - he still has a house there. His mother Margaret Rose ran a traditional corner shop, while his father Harold ran the chip shop opposite the family store. Whilst still a youngster Chris got a lift in Richard Burton's car and this is when he says decided he wanted to enter the world of showbiz.
He went on to become a keyboard player and even once accompanied local legend Bonnie Tyler. Along with his paino skills Chris has a strong singing voice, and he became well-known on the South Wales clubs circuit. His fame spread to television and he appeared in the BBC Wales Welsh-language TV soap 'Pobol Y Cwm'. He auditioned for the part of the hairdresser, but ended up playing the detective sergeant.
In 1990 he began a stint as a presenter for the newly-formed Touch AM radio station, going on in April 1996 to win the Silver in the Sony Radio Awards (widely regarded as Britain's 'Radio Oscars') for Best Regional Presenter. Later that year he joined Radio Wales, co-presenting the mid-morning magazine show 'Live Time'.
Chris now presents the late night show on the station, and formed a club of it's listeners which was dubbed 'The Garden'. At the time of writing the club has well over 20,000 members - including Chris' old musical partner Bonnie Tyler and designer David Emmanuel.
Following the death of his mother, Chris decided to keep running the family shop in her memory, and has since turned it into the base of the Chris Needs Hospital Appeal, which every year chooses two different hospitals to support.
In 2005 Chris was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List for his charity work in Wales.
Moment of Glory: Winning a Sony Silver Award, and gaining an MBE.

More About Chris Needs MBEWhen Welsh Language TV Soap 'Pobol y Cwm' needed an actor to play the part of a hairdresser, Chris decided he fitted the bill and was invited to audition. In a 1995 interview, he told 'The Western Mail' newspaper, "I went up thinking I was well in for the part of the hairdresser and camped it up - but for some strange reason I ended up with the part of a detective sergeant!"
He entered the world of radio broadcasting when he heard on the grapevine that the then newly-formed Touch AM Radio Station needed new presenters. Having made a demo tape in his front room, using a ghetto blaster with "disgusting sound quality", he sent it in to the station.
The rest is history - he became Touch AM's most popular presenter and moved a few years ago to BBC Radio Wales. Having hosted an immensely popular afternoon show, he has now moved to present the late show, and has single-handedly taken his slot to the top.
In the 2005 New Years Honours List, he was announced as M.B.E. for his services to broadcasting and Charity in Wales, and he was invested into the Order by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on June 22nd, 2005.
